These burgers are some of the best in the country. Limitless on the toppings, this gastronomic adventure starts while watching your burger fresh made right before you.

First opened in 1986, the menu is now offered in over three hundred locations and twenty five states. Why the success? Just when everyone thought there were enough Burger options? Here’s the reasons Five Guys Burgers and Fries say they been so widely accepted:

1. There are over 250,000 possible ways to order a burger at Five Guys.
2. They use only fresh, never frozen, ground beef.
3. There are no freezers in any Five Guys locations, just coolers. Never frozen.
4. They use only peanut oil.
5. They use only Idaho potatoes.
6. Their entire menu is trans-fat free.

Voted the Washingtonian Magazine’s “Reader’s Choice” #1 Burger for each year since 1999, Five Guys continues to collect awards and praises in every additional location.

Walk in and scoop up some fresh roasted in the shell peanuts, always free, while you place your order at the counter. Each separate order is placed in a paper bag. No confusion as to whose sandwich is whose. French fries are hot and crispy. If you are a lacto-vegetarian, their veggie sandwich and grilled cheese sandwiches are a musts! Choose the “veggie” toppings you like and add your choice of cheese for your perfect burger.
Once you visit, you might become a fanatic. How do you know if your a fanatic?

3. The sight of foil causes you to salivate.
4. Your hand is tired from drawing intense comment card pictures.
5. You “look up” when trying to order at fine dining establishments.

Well let me start by saying I’m old enough to remember when burgers were really good, remember “hot and juicy”? Five Guys delivers. Located on Polaris Drive, they deliver burgers from the grill. As soon as I walked to the counter, there was a large box of roasted peanuts, self serve and free, to hold you over while your order is prepared. Your choice is a burger or a hot dog. I got a regular burger she got a “little” burger. “Little” is one patty, regular is two. The fresh ground beef cooked in peanut oil on a grill delivers the taste. Tons of add ons, various cheeses, bacon, grilled onion, mushrooms, pickles, lettuce etc. Five Guys fries are the best, period. Cut long with the skin, they come in a cup but the paper bag used for each individual order holds not only the full french fry cup but enough spilled over in the bag for a second order. Only thing better than the fries are the cajun fries. The regular order is way to many for the waste line. The large order will fill two.

Five Guys places each individual order in a paper bag. Three in the group, three bags. I always hate it when someone has to open the bag, open the wrapper and smell or open the sandwich to see “who had the onion and mustard”. Not here. Each person has a numbered bag; one, two, three or however many on the order. Four kids and two adults, six bags. As soon as you pick up your bag(s), you’ll see little oil stains saying “hit and fresh fries inside”. And each bag has oil stains from the fries, hot and tasty. Great variety of drinks you dispense, including ice tea and my fav, lemonade.

It was busy at 2PM, but no waiting. Just give your order at the counter, get your number and drink cup, and find a seat. They call your number when ready. Don’t groan when you walk in and it looks busy, the counter mover fast and there is very little wait. We observed three employees in the customer area, all cleaning tables as soon as customers left and keeping the place very clean.

Next visit to Five Guys I thought I might want to try a hot dog, maybe a kosher dog. But once inside I know I’ll cave to the aroma of grilled burgers.

Out of a top score of five burgers, Five Guys gets five burgers.
